Tauriel is a character created for Peter Jackson's film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Hobbit*. She first appears in *The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug* (2013).
Tauriel is a Woodland Elf, specifically a Silvan Elf, of relatively low rank. She serves as the head of the Elven guard in Mirkwood, under the command of Thranduil, the Elvenking.
Unlike characters directly from Tolkien's book, Tauriel's inclusion was intended to add a stronger female presence and a romantic subplot to the films. Her story involves defying Thranduil's isolationist policies and developing a romantic interest in the dwarf Kíli.
